Skipjack Tuna

One of the smaller tunas, the world record stands at about 41lbs. These fish are very much school animals and when you catch one, you can be fairly sure you're going to catch a load more.

A migratory species moving around following the baitfish. They are an important food resource for both humans and big game fish, being the mainstay diet of the marlin species.

Fishing Method

Skipjack are normally taken on smallish lures trolled at about eight knots.

They are a light tackle species giving wonderful sport if you don't overpower them. In fact many anglers are now trying their hand at skipjack fishing using saltwater fly gear, a style of fishing we want to develop.

Under the right conditions they can be found just a few miles offshore, but beware, when the skipjack are about the larger ocean predators won't be too far behind.

Season

The skipjack are normally around from about June through to December.
