Mako shark
The mako shark is the one shark species considered to be a true big game fish. Present in all the worlds oceans, it can attain a size of over 1000lbs. They have a reputation for extreme violence when boated, so they are normally unhooked at the side of the boat.
Big makos tend to be rather solitary, although smaller fish do wander around in packs. Like all sharks they have voracious appetites for any type of meat.
Fishing Method
Big baits for big fish is the rule when fishing for mako. Normal methods would be to use plenty of groundbait (chum) to establish a slick of fish particles in the water, behind a drifting boat. Baits are then suspended at different depths using a small balloon as a float.
When hooked, makos make searing runs, and a large shark will test the strongest of tackle. Typical Algarve sharks run to about 150lbs, so 50lb tackle is fine, although some monsters have been hooked and lost.
Season
Mako shark fishing is available 12 months of the year.
