Dorado

One of the fastest fish in the sea, and highly sought after for its delicious flesh. Definitely a warm water, deep ocean species its irridescent colours are a marvel to see. A real ocean predator, they are often seen in the vicinity of floating flotsam which attracts smaller baitfish.

Algarve specimens tend to be rather small although the occassional 40lb fish is caught.

Dorado Dorado

Fishing Method

Great fun on light tackle, trolling lures is the normal method. This is another species that would lend itself to saltwater fly fishing techniques. Shortly after Reefcat was launched we had a tremendous run of dorado. There were times that we drove over a shoal, and there must have been a hundred dorado all airborne at the same time, trying to get at the lures. It was like being followed by a pack of excited puppies, great to see. Dorado are also the fastest growing fish in the sea, so the small school fish we see in August, can grow into very nice 12-15lb fish by the end of the season

Season

Dorado will often turn up in the warmer months whilst trolling lures for tuna or marlin. Season is much the same as for marlin, july through to early october, in a warm year they may hang around into december.
