Bluefin Tuna
The bluefin tuna is the largest of the tuna family, and is in fact one of the largest bony fish, reaching weights of over 2000lbs.
A highly migratory fish, they can be found all over the atlantic ocean. In fact tuna fishing has recently taken off on the west coast of Ireland.
Also known as tunny, a number of very large specimens were taken off the coast at Scarborough in the 1950's.
Fishing Method
Large bluefins are difficult to catch, and you need some serious fishing tackle to handle the power of these fish, a minimum of 80lb line class.
Methods include trolling large lures and live or deadbaits.
You're never quite sure when one of these monsters is going to turn up. Many anglers get smashed out of site on lighter tackle whilst fishing for other species.
Very few charter boats actively seek the bluefins, we're going to be targetting these fish and perhaps trying out some methods that have been successful in other parts of the world.
Season
The bluefin season usually lasts from June to December.
